Entry into paediatric neurology training for non-CCST holders

National Grid

Monitoring Training Progress

Competencies

The RCPCH has developed a pan-paediatric 'pyramid' of competencies appropriate to various stages of training. These documents are available at http://www.rcpch.ac.uk/Training/Competency-Frameworks
The finalised document for paediatric neurology (including compulsory child psychiatry and adult neurology components) is available to download at http://www.rcpch.ac.uk/doc.aspx?id_Resource=2449

Penultimate Year Assessments (PYA)

The rationale for a PYA process is set out in a background document. In practice the BPNA/Neurology CSAC of the College organises an annual centralised process in London typically at the same time as Grid interviews. Trainees will be contacted in October of the appropriate year and are typically asked to attend for a 45 minute interview with the National Training Adviser and two paediatric neurologists. This is not to be seen as something to be dreaded! Trainees generally find it a positive and valuable opportunity to reflect on training to date, raise any issues they may hve with their training, ensure they're on course to complete training by their CCST date and proactively plan their remaining training needs.

Arrangements for CCST holders

Clinicians from with the EU who wish to practise as a consultant in child neurology in the UK who already have a CCST/CCT in paediatrics are advised to contact training@bpna.org.uk for further advice.

Arrangements for CCST holders

Clinicians who wish to practice as a consultant in child neurology in the UK who have completed their training outside the EU have to apply for entry to the UK specialist register via the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB) (www.pmetb.org.uk) for consideration under "Article 14 regulations".
