Introduction

The BPNA distance learning programme has been developed under the direction of Professor Debbie Murdoch-Eaton. The course has been devised for paediatric neurology trainees and other members. The course was launched in January 2004 with the next course will begin in January 2008. UK based paediatric neurology trainees wishing to be considered are able to apply now.

The course is currently also available to students in the Netherlands and Switzerland. We hope to make the course available more widely overseas in the next 2 - 3 years. Details will be published here when they are available.

It is designed as a teaching package to complement the clinical training provided by our Training Centres, which is regarded as being particularly useful given that this period is now shortened to five and a half years. The course is divided into 12 units, each involving 48 hours study. Each unit will run for a two-month period every 2 years, and will be constantly updated, offering a comprehensive theoretical background in paediatric neurology for trainees and an opportunity for established consultants to update themselves on a particular topic as part of their Continuing Professional Development.

Initially our units will be produced in hard copy but it is envisaged that we shall be able to move very quickly to having them on CD-rom or web-based.

Course Details:

The units are as follow:-

  1. Introductory Unit
  2. Embryology, disorders of neuro-embryogenesis, hydrocephalus and neonatal neurology
  3. Normal and abnormal development and learning

Cost

The total cost of the course commencing 2008 will be £1,950 (to be confirmed). This includes the cost of accommodation, if required for the initial meeting). The course fees will be payable in four instalments: an initial payment of £750, followed by 3 further payments at 6 monthly intervals.
