Excursions to Sheffield's Past
The programme allows a completely free Saturday afternoon to explore the city or join one of the organised trips arranged to two historic sites:
Abbeydale reflects the unique industrial heritage of Sheffield. Built in the late 1700s for scythe manufacture, it offers
an opportunity to see the working and living conditions of the families employed in the hamlet.
Its crucible steel forge, water powered hammers and machinery are on view together with a labourer's
cottage and the home of the site manager, both restored to their original condition. Please note, this is an open air site.
An English Heritage site, Bolsover is a 17th century mansion built in the style of a medieval castle, with spectacular
views over the Vale of Scarsdale. Extensive conservation work has recently been completed on wall and ceiling paintings
in the Little Castle, its battlements and Venus Fountain Garden restoring the castle to its former glory.
(Please note Bolsover Castle is 40 minutes away by coach).
